Important Health Information

Dr. Brown Letterhead

 Dear Birdville ISD Family,

An outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, has caused an outbreak of respiratory illness and the United States has confirmed a handful of coronavirus cases related to travel. I want to assure you that our school district is keeping track of this situation through proven and trustworthy sources: our local health department, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These health officials believe the risk to our school community is low at this time.

Updated information from the CDC on coronavirus in the United States can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html. The most recent information about coronavirus in Texas may be found at: https://dshs.texas.gov/coronavirus/

Much is being learned about this newly emerged virus. Based on the current information, health officials are recommending local communities and schools should take the same steps to protect against coronavirus as we take to prevent the spread of everyday illnesses like the common cold or the flu:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The 2019 novel coronavirus is believed to be spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, much in the way the flu and other respiratory viruses are spread. Symptoms can be fever, cough, or difficulty breathing. At this time, persons considered at risk are those with travel to China, or those in close contact with persons infected with novel coronavirus.

While a new type of illness can be scary, we can protect our students, teachers, and the broader community by using simple everyday actions that protect people from other types of respiratory viruses. Our teachers, school nurses, and staff are working carefully to encourage these simple and effective habits of frequent handwashing, covering every cough or sneeze, and cleaning classroom tables/surfaces frequently. This is important not just to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, but to help prevent the spread of other infections that can lead to student illness and absences.

Thank you for your support of our district, our schools, our students and our teachers and staff.

Sincerely,

Dr. Darrell G. Brown Signature

Darrell G. Brown, Ph.D.

Winter Weather: Will you receive your call?

Person holding phone with question mark and BISD logo

In the case of winter weather, Birdville ISD is prepared to call parents and staff to inform them if the District will be closed. Don’t miss your call. Please log in and verify the primary phone number listed for you in Skyward Family Access (for parents) and the main phone number in MUNIS Employee Self Service (for staff) on the staff web page. For these types of calls, the system will only dial one primary/main number. If the field is left blank, no call will be made. Please make sure the appropriate number is listed in the system.

District Procedures for Inclement Weather

Winter weather procedures

Birdville ISD is dedicated to the safety of students and staff. With the onset of winter, and the threat of snow and ice, it is important for the BISD community to know the District has an established plan to determine whether schools will be open, delayed or closed. The District attempts to make a decision about delaying or closing as soon as possible, usually by 5:30 a.m.

If the superintendent determines to delay or close school, the District’s phone messaging system will be activated and the major radio and television stations will be notified. Also, the District will post this information on the District’s website, Facebook, Twitter, Birdville ISD News, and the District’s main voicemail at 817-547-5700. BISD only posts these notifications if school is delayed or closed — not if it is open as usual.

Changes to Form W-4 Employee Withholding Certificate

In January 2020, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will release a new version of Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate. The W-4 is the document used by Payroll to process the federal taxes withheld from your paycheck. Changes to the W-4 are the result of the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act and the most significant since the introduction of the document in 1943. The 2020 Form W-4 will be available after January 1, 2020.

Employees are not required to submit a new W-4 if they have an existing W-4 on file. However, the IRS recommends that a “paycheck checkup” be done to see if adjustments to your current withholding are needed. To conduct the checkup, you can use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at https://apps.irs.gov/app/tax-withholding-estimator. To effectively use the estimator, it is helpful to have a copy of your most recent pay stub and your most recent personal income tax return.

Again, you are not required to change your W-4. The income tax withholding will continue based on your previously submitted form if you do not submit a new form. The Payroll department cannot give tax advice and recommends that you consult with your tax professional or the Internal Revenue Service if you have any questions about the new form.
