2020–21 Calendar Update: Professional Learning Winter Weather Makeup Day

The Professional Learning (PL) Day originally scheduled for Monday, Feb. 15 has been moved to Friday, April 2 (Good Friday), which was previously designated as an Inclement Weather Makeup Day on the District’s approved instructional calendar. Students will be off on April 2, but campus instructional personnel will participate in professional learning as designated by the Teaching and Learning Department. Specific information regarding PL assignments that day will be sent out later.

Summer website staff trainings begin next week. We are offering a variety of training sessions. Basic, Advanced, YouTube and Open-Lab sessions for you to come in for 1-3 hours and work on your site with an onsite trainer available to answer your questions. Schoolwires BASIC Website Training (Credit: 3 hours)

During this session, participants will explore the fundamentals of creating and/or maintaining their BISD website. The session is designed to provide each participant with the basic skills needed to add content to their sites, and the ability to utilize shortcuts to keep students and families up-to-date on events/assignments as related to the classroom, campus or department. The goal is to empower participants with the tools and knowledge necessary to expand their technology competency. Recommendation:  If you are new to BISD or have not taken this course, it is STRONGLY recommended that this course be taken as a prerequisite before attending other sessions.

Schoolwires ADVANCED Website Training (Credit: 3 hours)

During this session, participants will explore advanced website features including page layouts, apps, embedded content, photo galleries and much more as they learn how to elevate their site to a completely new level. Afternoon open-lab sessions will be available to apply newly acquired webmaster skills.

Prerequisite:  Schoolwires BASIC Training

Open-Lab – Personalized Tech Support (Credit: 1 hour per registered hour)

Registrants will have the opportunity to work in a hands-on session with an onsite trainer. The goal of the open-lab is to increase knowledge and apply the skills/tools learned in the BASIC or ADVANCED Schoolwires training sessions, and/or to assist you in preparing/updating your website for the 2017–18 school year.

Note: you may schedule multiple one-hour sessions to extend your open-lab experience.

REMIND (Text Message Communication tool) (Credit: 3 hours)

During this session, participants will be introduced to REMIND, a FREE, safe, easy-to-use communication tool that helps teachers connect instantly with students and parents via their mobile devices. Come and learn how to set up your account, and how to utilize and display content on classroom websites.

(Please Note: This tool can also be used internally with staff and co-workers.)

SIOP training being offered this summer

BISD is offering two, three-day SIOP teacher training sessions this summer. SIOP is the only research-based model of sheltered instruction, and is a Tier 1 Priority in our District. In this engaging, interactive training, teachers (grades 2–12) will learn and practice more than 30 instructional techniques that they can take back to their classrooms in August to help their ELLs—and all their students—be successful.

Come learn effective differentiation practices from Ian Byrd. Ian is a much sought after presenter at gifted conferences and a well-respected educator within the gifted community. His website, http://www.byrdseed.com, is an excellent resource for all classroom teachers who work with gifted students. Ian will work with elementary teachers on June 20 and with secondary teachers on June 21.

North Ridge Middle School is hosting Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) training for teachers Oct. 15, 2016, Jan. 14, 2017, and April 1, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the conclusion of the three training sessions, teachers will have a working knowledge of SIOP and strategies that will enhance learning for English language learners and all students.
